4.11.08 Fiji: Day 1 (Leaving Boston and the flight)

After the longest half day of work ever I headed straight to Logan. I arrived 20 minutes or so before Todd, Meadow, and Chris. They stood briefly in the wrong line, no self check-in for international flights. We put our duty free shopping off for LA and went straight into the plane. None of our seats were together though. The flight was uneventful, we saw National Treasure and P.S. I Love You, which was better than I expected. In LA we ate at Wolfgang Pucks and loaded up on our duty free. On the Air New Zealand flight meadow and I had seats together on one side of the aisle and Chris and Todd on the other. We stayed up for an hour or two talking and then slept till breakfast an hour and a half before landing. Some of us were able to lay down across the seats as the flight was pretty empty. We arrived before sunrise and went through customs without any trouble. Rae showed up earlier than expected. She tackled me from behind. Eventually we caught cabs to the resort, arriving around 7:30am.

On the way to the resort we passed a McDonalds...but the sign at the drive through entrance said 'Bula!' The road was pretty crowded and the exaust from the cars is a lot rougher than in the US. Rae told us that the government had recently passed the first anti-polution regulation... It is now ilegal for your car to emit black smoke for more than ten seconds at a time... nine seconds is fine though, constant grey or white smoke, fine too. Well I guess you have to start somewhere...
