Saturday was eaten by the international dateline.
Our resort is on Denarau 'island' which is really more of a peninsula that was chopped off to keep the tourists isolated. There are half a dozen resorts on the island and it's one of the poshest resort areas on the mainland, Viti Levu. We were not supposed to check in till 4. They showed us to the hospitality suit where we changed, showered and wandered in circles a bit.
Eventually we decided to head down and explore the beach. We got as far as the pool when the concierge found us and told us our room was ready half a day early. The room was gorgeous. Master bedroom with a shower, bedroom with two twin beds and a Murphy bed in the living room and a second bathroom with large fully-tiled shower. Big table, couch and chairs, tv, stereo, kitchen with breakfast bar and even a washer and dryer. And a lovely "veranda" with table and chairs for meals with a view.
"Jesus didn't die so you could have a loudspeaker"
-Rae (regarding the amplified pentecostal church next to her house in Ba.Rae: Actually Tim said it in regards to my pentecostal church And he said it specifically in reference to the Easter Sunday service right? I think that makes it even funnier.
We dropped off our stuff and went down to the poolside restaurant for breakfast. It was excellent. I had forgotten how different the eggs and bacon taste out here. It wasn't too pricey though Rae said it was many times the cost of local fare. Don't forget the tasty tropical fruit pancakes. Nummy!
After breakfast we headed down to the beach. The water was wonderfully warm. We played for an hour or so...we didn't think we were burned, of course we were wrong ;)
We got cleaned up again (this would become a theme) and caught the 'Bula bus' an open trolley that runs the circuit of the resorts at Denarau. We took it to Port Denarau which is basically a tourist mall. We would later find out unexpectedly that it is also a real port. But for the time it was pleasant and had a pretty well stocked grocery store and a good pizza place. I had a ham, egg and pineapple pizza called an Aussie.
Rae: "There was a pig the size of this table. It looked like a hippopotamus!"
Meadow: "I want a pig..."
We stocked up on a few days' worth of groceries and headed back. The other resorts looked pretty good as we passed them.
We made massaman Tofu curry for dinner and had leftovers. We even made it down to the beach in time for sunset! Got some great photos.
We ended the day sitting around the table on the veranda (properly armed with bug spray of course) talking until we were all falling asleep.
